Catching up with the Class of 2010 has been a particularly interesting exercise.

Just five years after graduating it is generally relatively easy to contact the top students – they are often forging a path in in their chosen field, heading upwards on the ladder at a firm of attorneys. Not so the Class of 2010.

My legal career kicked off at a medium-sized law firm, where I practised mainly in the commercial litigation field. I found the litigation process to be a frustrating and protracted process with the desired outcome not necessarily linked to your input and effort. After exposure to the various legal fields, I found commercial law very interesting and wanted to focus my career in that direction. I enrolled for an LLM in Commercial Law at Wits University and majored in company law, competition law and banking and finance law.

Ashley Pillay says of the past five years, "I am a Senior Associate at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, where I completed articles in 2012. I cannot say that I had firm expectations of being anywhere in particular after graduating, although I did hope to have a diverse and stimulating legal practice. As it turns out, five years down the line, I have been rather fortunate in this regard.

I intend further travel and studies next year."

Capon updated without prejudice.

"I am an associate at Hay and Scott Attorneys in Pietermaritzburg. To be honest, my five-year plan has had a number of revisions over the past five years but I would say that I am very happy where I have landed up. Through a confluence of circumstance and, presumably, ability I have managed to carve out a niche for myself doing something that I would probably not have envisaged five years ago. If you had come to me five years ago and said that I would be back in Pietermaritzburg working for a 'boutique' firm I would probably have laughed at you.

Kathryn Abrahams

Abrahams says of the past five years, "I am now a senior associate in the insolvency and business rescue team at ENSafrica. I am very happy at the firm and the career decisions I have made. This is exactly where I wanted to be five years after graduation but it doesn't mean I don't question the sacrifices I need to make to be successful at one of Africa's premier law firms. A great work environment, supportive firm and brilliant colleagues do make it easier but I don't believe that any lawyer will ever really get the elusive work-life balance right.
